Penguin Flight Schools 2002
May 18-19 -- Washington DC
June 15-16 -- Juneau AK
June 29-30 -- Seattle WA
September 21-22 -- Chicago IL
Thanks for your interest in Penguin Flight School! John and I would
love for you to participate in the weekend running workshops we've
scheduled for 2002.
Flight Schools are organized by John "the Penguin" Bingham
and Karen Bingham. John is the author of "The Penguin Chronicles"
column in Runner's World magazine and of The Courage to
Start: A Guide to Running for Your Life (Simon & Schuster,
April 1999) and No Need for Speed: A Beginner's Guide to
the Joy of Running (Rodale, April 2002).
Our weekend running workshops are for runners and walkers of all
abilities-whether you're just starting or want to renew and improve
your running! The program provides motivation and encouragement
AND gives you strategies to achieve your running goals, physically
and emotionally, in a relaxed environment with other runners and
walkers of similar abilities.
John's a humorous and inspirational speaker! You'll have
a great time and learn how to improve your running in a comfortable,
low-stress atmosphere. Our emphasis is on running for fun and for
personal improvement and satisfaction, rather than for purely competitive
reasons. We believe runners and walkers at every level, not
just the fast folks, can get better and have a good time doing it.
This year Flight Schools will begin at 9:00AM on Saturday and end
at 5-6:00PM on Sunday. The program includes motivational sessions
on running and training, beginning instruction on the use of a heart
rate monitor, discussion of fundamental effort-based training techniques
for specific training and race goals, and group runs using the heart
rate monitor. We'll work with you to develop a training schedule
to meet your specific training or race goals.
The group runs together each day. The program begins with an initial
short run to acquaint you with using a heart rate monitor. If possible
we'll do a short track or interval workout designed to determine
your training heart rate target and some form analysis. There are
plenty of opportunities to run together, to learn, to socialize,
and to have a great time with your fellow runners!
Heart rate monitors are provided for participants to use during
Flight School. You may purchase one at a substantial discount. Runners
and walkers of all levels -- both beginning and advanced -- will
benefit from Flight School, because the same effort based training
techniques apply to running and walking, regardless of your pace.
Cost and Hotel Accommodations
The registration fee for Flight School is $199. This includes your
tuition, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
An official hotel will be selected for each Flight School location,
and a block of rooms will be secured in the hotel for participants.
Each participant is expected to make her/his own hotel reservation.
The hotel room is not included in the cost of Flight School (as
was true in previous years.)
To the extent possible, the cost of hotel rooms will be kept within
a $70-110/per night range. The selection criteria for the Flight
School hotel include factors such as affordable sleeping and meeting
room rates, as well as convenience to running locations, restaurants,
and airports. We look for affordable, comfortable, and presentable
locations such Hampton or Holiday Inns, Country Inn & Suites,
etc. rather than more luxurious hotel facilities.
After you have registered for Penguin Flight School, you will receive
a phone call or email message from Karen giving you the hotel information.
If you would like to know more about the cost in advance of registering,
please call or email Karen. She will make this information
available to you as soon as hotel arrangements are finalized for
each location.
So...John and I hope you will join us for a fun and rewarding weekend.
Remember, all you need to do is bring your running shoes and leave
the rest to us!
